You look at your sunscreen bottle and there it is: SPF 30, SPF 50, sometimes SPF 50+. You know a higher number means "more protection," but if someone asked you what that number actually means, you'd probably draw a blank. You're not alone: it's one of those facts we all see daily, and almost no one can fully explain it. And that confusion leads to mistakes you can surely identify with, like thinking you can stay in the sun twice as long with an SPF 50 as with an SPF 30 (it doesn't work that way) or trusting a high number without looking at what's behind it. What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. In practice, it's a number that tells you how long your skin takes to start reddening when you use sunscreen, compared to how long it would take without any.
Imagine it this way: if your unprotected skin starts feeling the sun in 10 minutes, and with a properly applied SPF 30 it lasts 300 minutes before feeling it, that's exactly the calculation that gives you the number 30.
Here's the catch: that calculation is done in a lab with a fairly generous amount of cream, much more than we usually apply in real life. Most people apply between half and a quarter of that amount, so in practice, the actual protection often falls short of what the label promises.
Does a higher number mean double the protection? Not exactly.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings: the SPF number doesn't increase proportionally to the actual protection. To give you an idea:
- An SPF 15 blocks about 93% of rays.
- An SPF 30 blocks about 97%.
- An SPF 50 blocks about 98%.
- An SPF 50+ barely goes above that, never reaching 100%.
Do you see the difference? Between SPF 30 and SPF 50, the number seems like a big jump, but in real protection, it's only one percentage point. No sunscreen, no matter how high the SPF, protects you one hundred percent.
What you do gain with a higher SPF is a margin of error: if you apply less than the ideal amount (which is normal) or are exposed for longer than you thought, that extra margin covers you better.

SPF doesn't tell the whole story: the other half is missing
This is the most important takeaway from this article. SPF only measures protection against UVB rays, which are the ones that burn your skin and are noticeable quickly. But there's another type of radiation, UVA, which penetrates deeper, doesn't burn instantly, and is primarily responsible for long-term skin spots and aging.
A cream can have a very high SPF and still protect poorly against UVA if its formula isn't designed for it. That's why in Europe, in addition to SPF, sunscreens must pass an extra test to be able to carry the UVA symbol (the letters within a circle) on the packaging. If you don't see it on the bottle, that cream doesn't guarantee that extra protection against aging.
So when you buy sunscreen, don't just look at the SPF number: also look for that UVA symbol. It's a small detail that makes a big difference.
Chemical filters vs. mineral filters: it's not the same
To achieve that SPF number, creams use sun filters, and here there are two very different paths.
Chemical filters
These are ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene. They work by absorbing the sun's rays and converting them into heat. They are widely used because they leave light and pleasant textures. The problem is that several of them have raised doubts: possible effects as hormone disruptors, documented skin allergies, and proven damage to corals, so serious that Hawaii and Palau have already banned them.
Mineral filters
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work differently: they remain on the skin's surface as a physical barrier that reflects the sun, without needing to absorb it. Zinc oxide, in particular, covers both UVA and UVB rays very well.
For years, the problem with these filters was aesthetic: they left that unflattering white layer. Today's formulas, with finer (but non-nano) particles, have largely solved that issue, so you can now have quality physical protection without looking like a ghost.
Which SPF is right for you?
There's no single answer; it depends on your skin and what you're going to do.
If you have fair, sensitive skin, or know you burn easily, and you're going to be truly exposed (beach, mountains, a full day outdoors), go for SPF 50. It gives you more leeway, and since we almost never apply the ideal amount, that extra margin comes in very handy.
For daily use—going to work, running errands, a walk—an SPF 30 with a good UVA seal is usually more than enough, as long as you apply it generously.
SPFs between 15 and 25 also protect, but with less margin of error. Nowadays, the general recommendation is to not go below 30, precisely because we know that in real life we apply less than we should.
Quantity matters as much as the number
Here's an uncomfortable truth: no SPF compensates for a layer that's too thin. The reference amount for the whole body would be roughly equivalent to a shot glass full of cream, and for the face, it would be about a level teaspoon. Most of us apply much less than that.
Furthermore, protection is lost with sweat, rubbing from a towel, or water, even with "water-resistant" creams, which only last well for 40 to 80 minutes in the water, not all day. That's why reapplying every two hours is not an exaggeration: it's what makes the actual protection closer to what the bottle promises.
Myths about SPF worth clarifying
"With SPF 50, I can last twice as long as with SPF 30": it doesn't work like a multiplying stopwatch. The real difference between the two is barely one percentage point of protection. What changes is the margin of safety, not the time you can spend in the sun.
"If the SPF is high, I'm completely protected": SPF only refers to UVB rays. Without the UVA seal, your skin could be suffering all the silent damage of aging without you realizing it.
"Mineral sunscreens protect less": this reputation comes from old, thick, and whitish formulas. Today's formulas offer equally good protection, with a much safer composition.
"If I don't get burned, I don't need to reapply": UVA ray damage isn't noticeable immediately, but it accumulates over time. Not getting burned doesn't mean your skin is safe.
How to choose your sunscreen well

No. The real difference between the two is minimal, barely one percentage point of protection.
