Receta: Bálsamo casero de manteca de karité y aceite de coco

Recipe: Homemade Shea Butter and Coconut Oil Balm

In the previous blog post we told you how you can take care of your skin in summer in a natural way, without using chemical products or plastic packaging. One of our suggestions was to use shea butter to repair the areas that have been most damaged by exposure to the sun, hot air and water in swimming pools or on the beach.

On our website, in addition to specific care products containing shea butter, such as the Matarrania elbow and heel repair cream , or the Clemence & Vivien Balms , with a sweet citrus aroma , summer flowers and Almond milk , we also have pure shea butter available . You can apply it to any part of your body that needs extra hydration and repair, including your face, if it is very dry. But, you can also make your own homemade products, mixing it with other ingredients.

Today we want to show you an example. We are going to teach you how to make a very simple balm that can have only 2 ingredients.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 50 grams of shea butter
  • 50 grams of coconut oil
  • 10 fresh marigold or dandelion flowers (OPTIONAL)
  • Lavender essential oil (OPTIONAL)
  • A saucepan
  • A wooden spoon or stick to stir
  • Reusable glass jar for storing balm

ELABORATION

STEP 1

Put the shea butter in a saucepan over low heat to dissolve it. If it is a day when the temperature is very high, you can put the butter in the sun, on a surface that gives off heat, during the middle of the day, and it will also dissolve.

STEP 2

Add the coconut oil . If it is very hot it will be liquid, if not, heat on low heat until it dissolves.

STEP 3 (OPTIONAL)

Add about 10 marigold or dandelion flowers and let it steep for an hour. To prevent the oils from turning into a solid, keep the heat very low. It should not boil.

Instead of flowers, you can also add a few drops of essential oil , for example lavender.

STEP 4

Strain the mixture into a sterilized glass container where you want to store it and let it cool. In summer, as the coconut oil becomes liquid, the balm will have a more fluid consistency. In winter, it will harden, but when it comes into contact with warm skin, the oils will dilute and it can be easily applied.

PROPERTIES

The mixture of these ingredients makes this balm a jewel :

  • Shea butter is ultra-hydrating, restorative and highly nourishing, protecting the skin from external agents and premature aging while regenerating damaged areas.
  • Coconut oil is also very moisturizing, it retains the skin's natural moisture. It is rich in lauric acid which gives it regenerative properties. In addition, it prevents the proliferation of fungi and bacteria, so it is a natural preservative that will make the balm last longer.
  • The calendula extract obtained by macerating the flowers has a calming effect, reduces irritation and is anti-inflammatory. Dandelion flowers , on the other hand, regenerate the skin after exposure to the sun and prevent premature aging.
